How to Protect Aluminum Wheels from Corrosion, Brake Dust & Pitting — Cars, Trucks, and Trailers

How to Protect Aluminum Wheels from Corrosion, Brake Dust & Pitting — Cars, Trucks, and Trailers

Aluminum wheels look incredible when they're clean. Two weeks later, they look like they've been through a sandstorm. Brake dust, road grime, water spots, and corrosion work fast on unprotected aluminum.

Here's how to clean them once and protect them so they stay clean longer.

Why Aluminum Wheels Corrode So Fast

Brake dust is the #1 killer. When your brake pads wear, they produce fine metallic and carbon particles that are extremely hot when they hit your wheels. These particles are also acidic. They literally burn into the aluminum surface, causing dark spots and pitting that no amount of washing will remove.

Add road salt in winter, water pooling in spoke crevices, and UV damage — your wheels are under constant attack from every angle.

The Protection Method

Step 1: Deep Clean

Regular car wash soap won't cut it. SHARKHIDE Aluminum Cleaner dissolves the baked-on brake dust and oxidation that soap leaves behind. Spray on each wheel, use a wheel brush to get into the spokes and barrel, rinse thoroughly.

Step 2: Polish (Optional)

For a mirror finish, use SHARKHIDE Metal Polish. Apply by hand, one wheel at a time. The polish removes fine scratches and restores the original shine under all that contamination.

Step 3: Protect

Apply SHARKHIDE Metal Protectant to each wheel. The aerosol version is perfect for wheels — spray into the spokes and barrel areas that are hard to reach with a cloth.

After protection, brake dust still lands on your wheels — but it can't bond to the surface. A quick rinse or car wash and it falls right off. No more scrubbing, no more pitting, no more replacement wheels.

What Works — And What Doesn't

Wheel wax — lasts 2-4 weeks before brake dust eats through it. You'll be reapplying constantly.

Ceramic coating — works but costs $200-400 per set of wheels at a detail shop. Needs professional application.

SHARKHIDE — DIY application, lasts 1-2 years, costs under $50 for a full set. Proven in marine environments far harsher than any road.

Coverage

  • Car wheels (set of 4) — 1 aerosol can or 1 pint
  • Truck wheels (set of 4) — 1-2 aerosol cans or 1 pint
  • Trailer wheels (set of 4-8) — 2 aerosol cans or 1 quart
  • Semi/commercial wheels — 1 quart per set

Works on All Wheel Types

SHARKHIDE protects polished aluminum, machined aluminum, clear-coated wheels, and chrome wheels. It's also safe on painted wheels — adds UV protection to prevent fading.
